Focused microwaves allow 3D printers to fuse circuits onto almost anything

Rice University researchers have developed a microwave-based 3D printing technique that enables direct printing of functional electronic circuits onto temperature-sensitive materials including living tissue, medical implants, and biopolymers without thermal damage. This breakthrough overcomes a decade-long manufacturing bottleneck by achieving 79.5% energy transfer efficiency (versus 8.5% for conventional methods) and enables on-demand tuning of electrical properties during printing. The technology opens immediate applications in smart medical implants, ingestible diagnostics, and biointegrated electronics that were previously impossible to manufacture.
