The agents nobody meant to build
AI agents are evolving from sanctioned productivity aids into an unmanaged operational risk: employees can unintentionally build de facto agents inside approved tools that automate business processes without clear ownership, auditability, or security oversight. For CIOs, the strategic implication is that agent governance must move beyond shadow IT inventories to include desktop-level controls, system guardrails, and role-based limits that preserve innovation while preventing brittle back-office automations and data corruption. IT organizations will need to balance enablement and control by defining what agents can touch, detecting when local automations become enterprise dependencies, and creating clear paths to promote valuable workflows into managed corporate services.
