The AI is in the computer

Major hardware vendors are converging on a common strategy: embedding AI assistants and agents directly into laptops, tablets, and other endpoints to make the device itself the primary interface for work. For CIOs, this signals a shift in platform competition toward AI-native experiences, which could reshape employee productivity, vendor selection, and end-user expectations while also increasing the importance of governance, security, and lifecycle management for AI-enabled devices. IT organizations should prepare for more tightly integrated AI hardware/software stacks that may accelerate adoption but also create new risks around data control, compliance, and lock-in.
